His standout display earned him the Club World Cup MVP award, which was handed to him by President Trump, who attended the final at MetLife Stadium.
Rather than stepping aside during the trophy presentation, Trump remained prominently positioned as Chelsea captain Reece James hoisted the silverware.
Soon after the unusual moment, James was asked about his interaction with Trump and what was said between them.
“To be honest, it was quite loud,” said the Chelsea right-back. “I couldn’t hear too much. He just congratulated me and the team for lifting the trophy and told us to enjoy the moment.”
Meanwhile, Palmer explained how he was “confused” by the ordeal.
“I knew he was going to be here but I didn’t know he was going to be on the stand when we lifted the trophy,” said Palmer. “I was a bit confused, yeah.”
But, Palmer has now shed new light on exactly what was said between him and Trump.
In an exclusive interview with the Mail, Palmer opened up about what Trump really said to him.
“When he gave me the award, he said his son is my biggest fan,” Palmer said.
“I can’t remember what I said. I think I said, ‘Thank you’ or something.”
The Chelsea star is currently on holiday in Saint Kitts and Nevis, where he has family.
“It’s important to come back to where your family is from,” Palmer added. “It’s nice to see how they grew up and their culture compared to ours… we were in America (for the Club World Cup) and it’s close. So, we thought we’d just come over and see everything.”
Trump clearly enjoyed himself at the Club World Cup and will be in attendance at next summer’s North American World Cup.
“The game is about unity, it is about everyone getting together,” the U.S President said on DAZN after Chelsea’s triumph.
“It is about a lot of love between different international countries.
“This is the most international sport on the planet, so it can really bring the world together.”
