The Danish international, who has faced a mixed start at Old Trafford, including a red card against Ipswich Town, posed a significant threat against Real Sociedad, winning a penalty for his side and appearing to earn another late in the game.
However, the second penalty incident sparked debate. As the match approached its conclusion, Dorgu and Hamari Traore collided in a contested challenge inside the box, with the referee awarding United a spot kick.
Replays suggested Traore may have made a slight contact with the ball, but VAR initially supported the on-field decision.
Surprisingly, Dorgu seemed to tell referee Benoit Bastien not to award the penalty, prompting the decision to be overturned.
This could have denied Fernandes his hat-trick, but the captain eventually completed it during a swift counter-attack shortly after.
The incident left fans on social media divided. Some praised Dorgu’s honesty, calling it “refreshing,” while others argued that his actions were risky and could have jeopardized the team’s lead.
United manager Ruben Amorim addressed the situation in his post-match interview, commending Dorgu for his integrity while acknowledging he might have felt differently had the match been closer.
“It depends. Is the right thing to do so I’m quite proud of him,” the Portuguese coach stated. “I cannot say if it’s 0-0 or losing I have same response.
“He did a great performance. In that position he had the physicality, he is clearly able to play in our league.”
Man United will now look forward to a last eight game with French team Lyon as they look to keep their slim hopes of Champions League football next season alive.
