The incident occurred when a long pass was played forward, and Jackson, competing for the aerial ball, collided with Botman, who went down clutching his face. Brooks reacted swiftly, rushing to the scene and issuing a yellow card.
VAR quickly stepped in, halting play to review the challenge before allowing the game to resume.
Upon closer inspection, replays revealed that Jackson had been focusing on Botman’s movements rather than tracking the ball.
As he briefly looked away, he struck Botman in the face with his forearm, leading Brooks to take another look and ultimately upgrade the punishment.
Explaining the call on X – formerly known as Twitter – PGMOL explained the process behind the review, saying: “VAR checked the referee’s call of yellow card to Jackson – and deemed that the challenge by Jackson on Botman was a serious foul play offence, therefore recommended an on-field review. The referee then upgraded the yellow to a red card.”
The reckless challenge occurred shortly after Newcastle surged into an early lead at St James’ Park, courtesy of Sandro Tonali’s goal.
The Italian midfielder was in the right place to slot home from close range after Jacob Murphy delivered a threatening cross across the goalmouth.
Jackson’s red card will have significant consequences for Chelsea, as he is now suspended for the rest of the season, leaving them without a natural striker at a crucial time—especially with Christopher Nkunku still recovering from injury.
With Chelsea deeply engaged in the battle for a Champions League spot, Jackson’s absence could prove costly, particularly as Cole Palmer may be forced into a No. 9 role, which could limit his usual effectiveness.
The Blues are set to face Manchester United next week before concluding their campaign against Nottingham Forest, a match that could be pivotal with just two points currently separating the two teams.
Meanwhile, Forest will be looking to gain an advantage as they prepare to take on Leicester City later today.
