Gerard Pique names best defender in the Premier League

Gerard Pique recently stated that Rio Ferdinand, his former Manchester United teammate, surpassed Chelsea icon John Terry as a defender.

Despite Pique’s brief tenure at United at the beginning of his remarkable career, he frequently played a supporting role to the formidable duo of Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic during his time in England.

Now, Pique has crowned Ferdinand as the greatest Premier League defender ever. Additionally, Pique revealed how Ferdinand frequently offered him guidance during the initial phases of his career.

He said: “We were very similar playing. And when I was there for me he was the guy to see what he is doing, to learn from him, he gave a lot of advice at the time which was very good to me.”

Pique added: “I consider him also, some people say John Terry, for me Rio was the best of all time in the Premier League, at least from what I saw. On the pitch he was incredible. He performed always at a very high level.”

Rio Ferdinand transferred to Manchester United from Leeds United in 2002 and stayed with the club until 2014, featuring in 455 matches for the Red Devils.

During his tenure, Ferdinand clinched six Premier League titles and one Champions League trophy, among numerous other honors with United.

On the other hand, John Terry is undeniably a Chelsea icon, amassing 717 appearances for the club over his 17-year tenure. He secured five Premier League titles and one Champions League victory with the Blues.

Both Terry and Ferdinand are widely regarded as some of the finest defenders to have ever played in the English top flight.
