Liverpool welcomed United to Anfield on Sunday afternoon for their first fixture following the October international break.
The home side entered the match on a three-game losing streak, while United had yet to secure back-to-back away victories under Ruben Amorim.
United made an ideal start when Bryan Mbeumo put them ahead within the first minute, after impressive link-up play involving Bruno Fernandes and Amad Diallo.
Liverpool reacted positively and struck the post through Cody Gakpo before their strong appeals for a penalty were dismissed by referee Michael Oliver.
Gakpo surged down the left flank and delivered a cross into the area that seemed to make contact with the arm of United wing-back Amad.
Referee Oliver allowed play to continue, and the situation was reviewed by the Video Assistant Referee, who upheld the original decision.
The officials concluded that while the ball did touch the United player’s arm, it was positioned naturally and did not constitute a foul.
An official statement released by the Premier League during the match read: “The referee’s call of no penalty was checked and confirmed by VAR – with it deemed that Amad’s arm was in a natural and justifiable position.”
