Youri Tielemans and Ollie Watkins scored for Unai Emery’s team, spoiling Arsenal’s celebrations.
The controversial moment came late in the game when a shot deflected off Havertz and into the net.
Arsenal players began celebrating, thinking they had scored a legitimate goal, but the referee halted the celebrations. After a VAR check, the goal was disallowed because the ball had struck Havertz’s hand.
The Premier League later issued a statement on their X account, explaining the decision.
The Premier League’s Match Centre account posted:
“The Arsenal goal was awarded on-field. The VAR established that the ball hit Havertz’s arm immediately before entering the goal and recommended that the goal was disallowed.”
The on-field decision was to award Arsenal’s goal, but the VAR review revealed that the ball had struck Havertz’s arm just before crossing the line, leading to the recommendation to disallow the goal.
The Gunners squandered several opportunities to secure a win, which ultimately cost them two crucial points in the Premier League title race.
In contrast, Liverpool strengthened their title challenge with two late goals from Darwin Nunez, securing a victory.
This match highlighted Arsenal’s need for greater squad depth, as the only attacking substitution made was Raheem Sterling.
