Despite joining United in a £73 million deal from the German club in July 2021, the 23-year-old has been absent from Old Trafford action since August 26, following a dispute with manager Erik ten Hag. Sancho has been training separately from the first team since September.
Upon completing the loan move, which includes no option to sign permanently, Sancho said: “When I came into the dressing room today, it felt like ‘coming home’.
“I know the club inside and out, I’ve always been very close with the fans here, and I’ve never lost contact with those in charge.
“I can’t wait to see my teammates again, go out on the pitch, play football with a smile on my face, prepare goals, score goals and help qualify for the Champions League.”
Sancho’s rapport with Ten Hag soured after being left out of the squad for a loss at Arsenal, with the United manager attributing it to his training performance.
Sancho refuted these assertions in a social media post, stating he was unjustly labeled a “scapegoat” and refused to apologize.
This incident prompted scrutiny of Sancho’s attitude from some quarters, but former interim United boss Rangnick maintained that during his half-season at Old Trafford, Sancho’s attitude was never in doubt.
Rangnick said, via Sky Germany: “He had his best time in Dortmund and, when he was healthy, he always played for me. However, he wasn’t as carefree as in Dortmund.
“But that was also due to the overall situation. When he was fit, he was set and did well under me. He no longer had a chance in Manchester. He now has to get back into a rhythm and really into shape in Dortmund. From his point of view, the change makes perfect sense.
“In the six months I had him, there wasn’t a single discipline problem. On the contrary. He is a calm and pleasant guy.”
