One bright spot was Benjamin Sesko finally netting his first United goal. However, the achievement was eclipsed by another underwhelming team display and collapse.
United spent much of the match on the back foot, conceding twice in the opening 20 minutes. Sesko gave them hope with a goal midway through the first half, but Brentford sealed the result with a third strike in stoppage time.
The match wasn’t without drama. Bruno Fernandes missed a penalty after United supporters were outraged that Nathan Collins received only a yellow card for dragging down Bryan Mbeumo in what many considered a last-man foul.

The outcome leaves Amorim’s side in a familiar and precarious spot—just above the relegation zone. With whispers growing about possible replacements, the Portuguese manager is running out of room for error.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe has reportedly reached out to Gareth Southgate amid rising uncertainty over Amorim’s tenure. The INEOS boss is believed to have included the former England coach on a shortlist of three possible candidates.
According to talkSPORT, the other options being considered are Crystal Palace’s Oliver Glasner and Bournemouth’s Andoni Iraola.
Southgate may be the frontrunner due to Ratcliffe’s long-standing admiration and the fact he is currently unattached.
His name was first linked to the United role when Ratcliffe became co-owner in February 2024, and surfaced again after Erik ten Hag’s exit later that year.
The 55-year-old has been without a job since leaving his post with England after Euro 2024, though his chances at Old Trafford could depend on timing.
Reports indicate United are hesitant to dismiss Amorim before November 1, when the financial cost of terminating his contract would be significantly lower.
Many felt United were unfairly treated on Saturday when Brentford avoided a sending off, including former Premier League official Mark Halsey.
Collins gave away a second-half penalty after fouling Mbeumo in the box as the last defender.
He was shown a yellow card, but some argued it should have been red for denying a clear scoring chance. VAR upheld Craig Pawson’s original decision after a review.
The Premier League Match Centre later issued a statement clarifying the call. “The referee’s call of penalty was checked and confirmed by VAR – with Collins deemed to have pulled Mbeumo back,” it read. “VAR also checked the referee’s call of yellow card to Collins – and deemed that Mbeumo wasn’t in control of the ball.”
However, Halsey, who spent over a decade officiating in the top flight, criticised both the ruling and the explanation, insisting the correct decision was obvious.
“The statement from the Match Centre said that Mbeumo did not have control of the ball,” he told the Sun. “It doesn’t say in law about having the ball under control. It’s about the likelihood of keeping control of the ball.
“In my opinion, the Match Centre statement was absolute nonsense and it was a clear, clear denial of a goalscoring opportunity. Manchester United will be very disappointed with that decision. A red card should have been shown to the Brentford player.”
