Jim Ratcliffe, the INEOS founder who recently acquired a 28% stake in Manchester United, expressed his desire to bolster the current team with a legendary player, notably excluding Cristiano Ronaldo from his preference.
At 71, Ratcliffe is keen on restoring Manchester United’s status as a premier force in global football.

The club has not secured a Premier League championship since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013.
An extensive review of the club is underway, spearheaded by Sir David Brailsford, scrutinizing every facet of the organization.
This includes an evaluation of the playing roster. The onus is on manager Erik ten Hag to secure a spot in the upcoming Champions League, with the team presently positioned sixth in the league standings.
Ratcliffe acknowledges the challenges faced by the Dutch coach, given the less-than-ideal strength of the squad.
The team has been beset by persistent injuries this season. Notably, Mason Mount, a key midfield acquisition, recently returned to play, coming off the bench during the team’s 4-3 victory against Liverpool in the FA Cup quarter-finals, marking his first game since November.
Sofyan Amrabat has had a tough time finding his footing after his last-minute loan transfer from Fiorentina, a Serie A club. Meanwhile, Christian Eriksen’s participation has dwindled following his comeback from an ankle injury sustained last year.
In a conversation with the Geraint Thomas Cycling Club, Ratcliffe highlighted the midfield lineup of Manchester United, expressing his wish to witness a prime Paul Scholes playing in tandem with Casemiro and Kobbie Mainoo.
When asked who he’d like to see back at Old Trafford, Ratcliffe said: “Paul Scholes. I think that’s the player that’s most missing. Casemiro and Mainoo are sort of quite defensive midfielders, but they don’t have a Scholes or an Iniesta.”
Paul Scholes, a one-club man, dedicated his entire professional playing days to Manchester United, clinching 11 Premier League titles during his tenure.
His commitment to the club was evident as he made over 700 appearances in two separate spells, first hanging up his boots in 2011 and then making a comeback the following year.
Jim Ratcliffe, while discussing potential additions to the current squad, chose not to mention Cristiano Ronaldo, who parted ways with United for the second time in November 2022.
Ronaldo, a recipient of the Ballon d’Or on five occasions, is now showcasing his talents in the Saudi Pro League, playing for Al Nassr.
