Real Madrid to pay Chelsea millions in Eden Hazard add-ons despite Belgian’s retirement

It’s reported that Real Madrid is on the verge of making a substantial payment to Chelsea as part of the add-on clauses from the Eden Hazard transfer agreement.

Real Madrid secured their 15th Champions League title on Saturday with a 2-0 victory over Borussia Dortmund at Wembley, thanks to goals from Dani Carvajal and Vinicius Jr.

Real Madrid’s successful run to the final has reportedly resulted in a windfall for Chelsea, with a bonus of around £5 million linked to Hazard’s 2019 transfer, as per ESPN.

This comes even though Hazard had his contract with Madrid terminated last summer and retired from professional football in October at the age of 32.

The 2019 transfer deal of Hazard to Madrid included several performance-based clauses, one of which was activated by Real Madrid’s journey to the Champions League final against Dortmund.

Despite Hazard’s retirement, the contractual obligations between the clubs are said to be still in effect, obligating Madrid to make an additional payment to Chelsea.

Hazard, who had a remarkable stint at Chelsea, managed to score only seven goals in 76 matches during his four-year tenure with the Spanish club.

Real Madrid is unlikely to be troubled by this financial commitment, maintaining their record of not losing a significant European final since 1983.

Upon winning his first-ever UEFA Champions League, Jude Bellingham told TNT Sports: “I’ve always dreamt of playing in these games.

“You go through life with people telling you that you can’t do things. Days like this remind you. It gets hard sometimes and you wonder whether it’s worth it but nights like this make you realise.

“I was alright until I saw my mum and dad. Nights like where they could have been at home by 7 o’clock but they’re out until 12 on trips to take me to football.

“And my little brother who I’m trying to be a role model for. The best night of my life.”
