Reece James blasts referees after Chelsea 2-2 draw with Tottenham

Reece James has blasted the referees for Chelsea’s draw with Tottenham on Sunday, after Spurs scored two contentious goals.

Chelsea took the lead in the first-half at Stamford Bridge thanks to Koulibaly’s stunner and were dominating until Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s equaliser.

Blues players and manager Thomas Tuchel were incensed by the goal, feeling that Havertz was fouled by Rodrigo Bentancur in the build-up, while Richarlison was offside and in Edouard Mendy’s eyeline when Hojbjerg shot.

Tuchel and Tottenham boss Antonio Conte engaged in an heated exchange after the goal, but the score was not level for long as James scored what he thought was the winner with just 13 minutes to play after a well-worked move.

But it was not to be for the defender, as Harry Kane headed past Mendy deep into stoppage time to make it 2-2, although again there was huge debate about whether the goal should have stood, with Cristian Romero fouling Cucurella just prior.

Tensions then boiled over, with both Tuchel and Conte getting sent off after clashing again at the full-time whistle.

James, arguably man of the match for his brilliant display in a number of different positions, was just as incensed as his manager post-match, telling Match of the Day 2: ‘I think we should have won the game.

‘There were two arguable goals for them. I think the referees and the fourth official need to look back on them. It’s frustrating for us when you deserve to win the game.

‘I don’t know what they [the officials] were looking at, but we have to take the positives from the game. We were all over them throughout the game.

‘I love scoring and I was in the right position. I just like helping the team as much as I can.’
