REVEALED: How Busquets ‘disrespected’ United during 2011 Champions League final

The pain of Manchester United’s 2011 Champions League loss to Barcelona is still raw for Rio Ferdinand.

Sergio Busquets ‘disrespected’ United defenders when Barca won the 2011 Champions League final, according to former United centre-back Rio Ferdinand.

Two years on from a painful 2-0 loss in Rome, United were handed another footballing lesson by the Catalans at Wembley with Pep Guardiola’s passing wreaking havoc.

Sir Alex Ferguson went on to call Barcelona the ‘best team’ he had ever faced and said ‘nobody’s ever given us a hiding like that’ after the 3-1 defeat, with Pedro, Lionel Messi and David Villa all on the score sheet.

Ferdinand recalled that defeat in a ‘What I Wore’ feature with BT Sport when he talked about countless shirts that meant something to him, whether it was United’s Champions League winning kit from 2008 or the first ever England jersey in 1983.

There were some bad memories in there, too, such as Brazil’s away kit from the 2002 World Cup, City’s home shirt from 2012.

“I remember standing and watching them go up the stairs at Wembley and just standing there going, ‘Wow. I’ve never been embarrassed in public like this in my life,'” Ferdinand said.

“It was worse than everything. This was the most embarrassing night of my life.

“I remember Busquets. ‘You and Vidic: boom! boom! boom!’ The disrespect that he showed then. I thought, ‘Nah, I can’t accept this.'”
