Over the summer, Enzo Maresca was named manager at Stamford Bridge, joining from Leicester City after leading the Foxes back to the Premier League.
This season, Maresca’s team is currently third in the league, nine points behind leaders Liverpool and tied with Arsenal, who are considered strong title contenders.
In their last match before the international break, Chelsea managed a 1-1 draw at home against Arsenal.
Gabriel Martinelli scored for Arsenal around the hour mark, but Pedro Neto equalized, securing a point and keeping Chelsea ahead of Arsenal in the standings due to a better goal difference.
Since Todd Boehly’s acquisition of the club in 2022, Chelsea’s transfer activity has ramped up significantly. During the summer window, they brought in 11 players.
Omari Kellyman, Tosin Adarabioyo, Marc Guiu, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Renato Veiga, Caleb Wiley, Filip Jorgensen, Aaron Anselmino, Pedro Neto, and Joao Felix joined on permanent contracts, while Jadon Sancho arrived on a season-long loan from Manchester United.
Although Chelsea have a deep squad, they are reportedly still searching for defensive reinforcements.
Romano has mentioned Benfica’s Tomas Araujo as a player Chelsea “love,” and the club could target him either next summer or as soon as January.
Araujo, 22, rose through Benfica’s youth ranks and has made 36 senior appearances for the club, debuting in December 2021.
He’s currently under contract until 2028, with a release clause reportedly set at €100 million, meaning Chelsea would need to make a substantial bid to secure his transfer.
