What Ronaldo did after scoring his penalty in shootout sums up his elite mentality

Portugal secured their place in the Euro 2024 quarter-finals by defeating Slovenia in a tense penalty shootout.

After a scoreless 90 minutes and extra time, the match went to penalties—the first shootout of this summer’s tournament.

Portugal triumphed 3-0 in the shootout, advancing to the next round.

Cristiano Ronaldo, who had missed a penalty in extra time, redeemed himself by scoring Portugal’s first spot-kick. This was followed by successful penalties from Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes and Manchester City’s Bernardo Silva.

Diogo Costa put on an incredible display, saving all three of Slovenia’s penalties.

Ronaldo, after missing his penalty in extra time, immediately apologized to the Portugal fans following his successful shootout conversion, demonstrating his strong mentality.

After scoring past Jan Oblak, the 39-year-old acknowledged the fans behind the goal with a gesture, admitting his earlier mistake.

Though he was brought to tears by Oblak’s save during extra time, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner was jubilant at the final whistle as Portugal moved forward.

Roberto Martinez’s team will now face Didier Deschamps’ France on Friday for a spot in the Euro 2024 semi-finals.
