Ruben Amorim is set to take over as the new manager of Manchester United, with Cristiano Ronaldo already emphasizing what his fellow countryman should prioritize at his former club.
Amorim will assume his role as United’s head coach on Monday, November 11, following his last game with Sporting this weekend against Braga.
Since Erik ten Hag’s departure, Ruud van Nistelrooy has served as interim manager, securing two wins and a draw in his three matches at the helm. ..Continue Reading
His final match as interim manager will be against Leicester City tomorrow at Old Trafford.
Amorim has signed a contract with United through 2027, and his first match in charge will be after the international break when United faces newly promoted Ipswich Town.
Ronaldo, who had two stints at United, was initially signed by Sir Alex Ferguson in 2003 from Sporting for over £12 million as a replacement for David Beckham.
During his first six years at Old Trafford, Ronaldo won three Premier League titles, the Champions League, and the Ballon d’Or.
He left in 2009, moving to Real Madrid in a then-record transfer worth £80 million.
After periods at Madrid and Juventus, Ronaldo returned to United in 2021, though his second spell was less successful and ended after a contentious interview with Piers Morgan, where he criticized the club and former manager Ten Hag. He then joined Al Nassr in Saudi Arabia.
In a recent conversation with former teammate Rio Ferdinand on his podcast, Ronaldo stressed that any United manager must aim high and convey the ambition to compete for both the Premier League and Champions League, regardless of how challenging that may be.
He said: “Manchester United, they need to rebuild everything, in my opinion. The coach, they say they cannot compete to win the league and Champions League.
“You cannot say, if you are a Manchester United coach, that you’re not going to fight to win the league or Champions League.
“You have to mentally say, ‘Listen, maybe we’ve not got that potential’. But you cannot say that [out loud]. You have to try.”
