Ruben Amorim feels he is managing the worst Manchester United team in history.
Since taking over from Erik ten Hag at the start of November, the 39-year-old has overseen three wins, two draws, and six defeats in the Premier League.
In his previous role, Amorim restored Sporting Lisbon to its former glory, but his managerial progress has stalled since arriving at Old Trafford. ..Continue Reading
Sunday’s 3-1 loss to Brighton dealt another blow, leaving United desperate for answers.
“We are the worst team maybe in the history of Manchester United,” said Amorim. “I know you want headlines but I am saying that because we have to acknowledge that and change that.”
United conceded within the first five minutes when Yankuba Minteh converted Kaoru Mitoma’s cross. Bruno Fernandes equalized from the penalty spot midway through the first half, but second-half goals from Mitoma and Georginio Rutter sealed the victory for Brighton.
The Seagulls’ third goal was especially disheartening for the Old Trafford crowd, as Andre Onana mishandled Yasin Ayari’s low cross, allowing it to fall perfectly for Rutter.
Amorim has attempted to introduce the 3-4-3 formation that served him well in Portugal.
Despite United’s squad being assembled at great cost to suit a different system, the manager remains adamant about sticking to his tactics, which means more struggles are likely until the team adapts.
“With me, it is clear I’m not going to change the way I see the game,” Amorim explained. “I’m very clear on that. The players are going to suffer, I’m sorry, the fans are going to suffer. I have one way of doing things, I know it’s going to bring results. But we have to suffer these moments. I think it’s very clear for everybody what we are going to do.”
Going forward, Amorim wants his players to be more gutsy and improve their record at the theatre of dreams.
“We are losing so many games at home, it is not acceptable,” he added. “We need to win games to help us sell the idea to the players. We need training to fix things.
“We try to have possession, control the ball, but the players are anxious, not putting the ball between the lines, always a touch. This is not acceptable.”
