Rudiger withdraws from Germany squad with groin injury

Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger has been forced to pull off from Germany’s squad for the upcoming UEFA Nations League matches because of a groin injury.

The 25-year-old required treatment after Chelsea’s routine win over Southampton on Sunday.

Rudiger will now miss Germany’s Nations League matches with Holland and France, although he says he will be able to train during the break.

‘I won’t be available for Germany for the upcoming matches due to a groin problem,’ he tweeted.

‘I will do some individual training sessions during the int. break and I’m confident to be back soon.

‘Best of luck to my German teammates for the next two games.’

Chelsea fans will hope Rudiger is fit in time to face struggling Manchester United at Stamford Bridge on September 20.

The 3-0 win over Southampton on Sunday meant that the Blues returned to the top of the table, level on points with City and Liverpool.

But despite Chelsea’s good start to the new campaign, manager Maurizio Sarri is not convinced they will challenge for the league.

‘Manchester City and Liverpool are a step forward of us,’ the former Napoli boss said after the Southampton win.

‘The gap with City was large and we are trying to close it, but it’s very difficult in just one season.’
