Mohamed Salah removed all mentions of Liverpool from his X account following the team’s emphatic 5-1 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt in the Champions League on Wednesday night.
Salah began the match on the bench in Germany, as goals from Hugo Ekitike, Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, Cody Gakpo, and Dominik Szoboszlai secured a much-needed win for Arne Slot’s squad, ending a streak of four consecutive losses. ..Continue Reading
The 33-year-old has faced criticism for underwhelming displays this season and has now gone five games without a goal or assist for Liverpool.
Salah further frustrated fans after coming on as a second-half substitute against Frankfurt, choosing to shoot from close range rather than pass to Florian Wirtz for an easy finish.
Supporters were left confused by Salah’s post-match behavior, as he removed a photo of Liverpool’s Premier League title celebrations from the header of his X profile.
He also swapped his profile image — previously showing him in a Liverpool jersey holding the Premier League trophy — for a picture of him with his two children on a beach.
When questioned before the match about the decision to bench Salah, Slot responded: “The first answer is always yes. But that is also to do with Mo and all the players I have.
“Every time I select a team, it’s always difficult because I have so many good players. That’s also the reason why I use these players.
“I liked the way we ended the game against United. Mainly the second half. Created a lot of chances.
“And Ryan [Gravenberch] is out, so that means we have to restructure our midfield a little bit as well – defensively and offensively. So all together with the way Frankfurt usually plays, we decided to start like this.
“But as always, I have players who start the game and I have players who can impact the game off the bench and that is [the case] today as well.”
