Scholes names best midfielder in the world after Man City thrashed Man Utd

Paul Scholes believes Kevin De Bruyne is the best midfielder in the world after the Belgian shone in Manchester City’s 4-1 victory over Manchester United on Sunday.

De Bruyne scored Man City’s first two goals in the derby win and helped his team completely control the second half before going off in the 80th minute.

It was a superb performance from the 30-year-old as City’s midfielders outclassed their opponents and De Bruyne took his Premier League goal total tally to 51.

Scholes is not just impressed by his goal-scoring ability, but everything in his game, with the midfielder contributing assists, defensive work and leadership on the field.

‘He’s the best Premier League midfielder there is and probably the best in the world. I can’t think of anyone else who touches him,’ Scholes told the Premier League.

‘He does everything. It’s alright having these footballers who are great passes, keep possession well.

‘But this lad scores goals, makes goals, he defends, his passes are brilliant. ‘He’s got absolutely everything that you’d want in a top class midfielder.

‘It’s difficult to stop him because they’ve got three or four…Bernardo Silva, Jack Grealish, Phil Foden, they’ve got a great team, a great bunch of players.

‘Every time he gets the ball he’s thinking about a goal. He’s thinking about assisting a goal or scoring a goal and it’s a great attitude to have.’

De Bruyne has suffered with injuries over the last two years, but manager Pep Guardiola is delighted to say that his problems are behind him and he is definitely back to his best.

‘Kevin is back,’ said Pep. ‘After the injuries, he was struggling for rhythm. But now he is scoring goals, playing with power. ‘He is one of the top players in the world, but he still runs and works hard, I’m so proud of this guy.’
