Benjamin Sesko explains why he’s better than Viktor Gyokeres ahead of Arsenal game

Benjamin Sesko, Manchester United’s latest attacking recruit, was once on Arsenal’s shortlist before they opted to pursue Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting Lisbon.

Interestingly, the interest was mutual. United had also been tracking Gyokeres, largely due to his impressive stint under Ruben Amorim in Portugal. ..Continue Reading

However, Gyokeres ultimately chose to join Arsenal, leaving Sesko surplus to requirements at the Emirates. The Slovenian forward then turned down Newcastle and signed with United, becoming Amorim’s fourth acquisition of the transfer window.

This Sunday’s Premier League opener sees United clash with Arsenal in a high-stakes showdown—potentially pitting Sesko against Gyokeres in a battle of the new strikers.

The comparison between the two is already stirring discussion, especially since Sesko, in his debut interview with United, highlighted a skill where he believes he outshines Gyokeres: aerial ability.

When asked to list his top three strengths, heading stood out as a key asset.

“Speed, power, kicking, and heading,” Sesko replied.

“I’m kind of the guy who is ready to attack, to be in front, if there is space behind to run into,” Sesko told MUTV.

“Of course, if there are crosses, it’s always going to be nice. I’m always going to be there, and I think that is what is important.”

Manchester United have long struggled to convert chances from wide areas, particularly when it comes to aerial finishes—making the arrival of their 22-year-old striker all the more exciting.

Early glimpses from training suggest he’s already demonstrating the kind of heading ability the team has been missing.

In contrast, Viktor Gyokeres still has work to do in that aspect of his game.

Although he found the net with a header on his debut, his overall record in Portugal was underwhelming in that department.

Interestingly, Gyokeres shares this trait with Thierry Henry—despite his prolific scoring, heading was never his strong suit. The Swedish forward has managed just four headed goals in 102 Liga Portuguesa appearances for Sporting.

While heading may not be the defining skill for every striker, it becomes a valuable asset when paired with teammates like Bukayo Saka, whose crossing is arguably the sharpest in the league, and Martin Zubimendi, whose technical brilliance can unlock any defense.
