Manchester United have compiled a “three-man shortlist,” including a former Chelsea star, as they seek to sign a new left-back, according to reports.
Following a slow start to the transfer window, United have secured deals for Joshua Zirkzee and Leny Yoro, and they are currently negotiating moves for Manuel Ugarte and Matthijs de Ligt.
The Red Devils aim to enhance a squad that finished eighth in the Premier League, needing further additions to return to the Champions League next season.
Defensive reinforcements remain United’s main priority, and they might still sign another center-back despite already acquiring Yoro.
The Old Trafford club is also looking to strengthen both left and right-back positions, with Tyrell Malacia still far from returning from a long-term injury and Aaron Wan-Bissaka only having a year left on his contract, which he is expected to leave.
Luke Shaw is United’s first-choice left-back, but his long-term fitness is in doubt, even though he played for the first time since February at Euro 2024.
Alonso is an unexpected name being considered as United search for a new left-back. The Mirror reports that United have compiled a list of three targets to address their left-back issues.
The report mentions that the names being considered are David Hancko of Feyenoord, former Chelsea player Marcos Alonso, and Crystal Palace’s Tyrick Mitchell.
Alonso’s inclusion is surprising, but he could be a smart acquisition given he’s a free agent and has Premier League experience. There’s also a possibility of a cut-price deal for Mitchell as he has only one year left on his contract.
The Mirror adds that United tried to sign Alonso last year but couldn’t finalize a deal, eventually opting for a loan deal for Sergio Reguilon, which they terminated in January.
Malacia’s knee injury must be a significant concern for United since he didn’t play at all last season and has been sidelined for 14 months.
