Son Heung-min reveals the reason why he supported Man Utd

Son Heung-min has revealed that he was a huge Manchester United fan when he was growing up, though has had to shelve his allegiances since joining Tottenham.

The South Korean star – who is currently sidelined with a calf injury – has established himself as one of the best players in England since swapping Bayer Leverkusen for the London side in 2015.

Son has hit double figures for both goals and assists in each of the last two years and committed his long-term future to Spurs by signing a new four-year contract over the summer.

While Son is focused on performing well for Spurs and aiming to end their wait for silverware, he has now revealed he supported the Red devils as a kid because of compatriot Ji-sung Park, who spent seven years at Old Trafford.

When asked about his favourite club when he was younger, Son told Pro:Direct Soccer: ‘Manchester United because obviously Ji-sung was playing.

‘He’s a national hero. In Korea also they would say he has two hearts. He’s a national hero for me. He’s a good friend of mine.

‘He offered to the players from South Korea [the way to play], he gave us hope and the opportunity. It’s not easy, you know, he was the first one that played in the Premier League.

‘So I was supporting United, but I can’t now!’

Park won four Premier League titles and the UEFA Champions League at United, while Son is yet to claim any silverware with Tottenham.

Son – who has scored in two of his three Premier League games this campaign – has been out of action for Spurs since the international break due to an injury.
