Luciano Spalletti attributed Italy’s elimination from the European Championship to insufficient preparation time.
The Italian team suffered a clear defeat against Switzerland, conceding 2-0. Throughout the group stage and into the round of 16, the Azzurri failed to display convincing performances.

In light of these disappointing showings, scrutiny within the Italian team is inevitable, and Spalletti has taken responsibility for the outcomes.
Speaking after the match, Spalletti said: “The responsibility is mine for what happened. The fault always lies with the coach because I chose the players, and it is clear that it is a path in which I have to make some acquaintances.
“I haven’t had much time to get to know the players. The previous coaches have all had 20 games to test and get to know them, some even 30. A few more games could have helped me.”
Spalletti has managed Italy for only 14 games since becoming the national team’s head coach in August 2023.
After guiding Napoli to a Serie A title, he was appointed to lead the Italian national team following his exit from Naples.
Even though Italy was eliminated in a disappointing fashion by Switzerland, Spalletti remains composed about his role as head coach.
He explained: “I’m talking to [the Italian football president Gabriele Gravina] because he has always behaved towards me like a great person and a serious professional.”
