Erik ten Hag makes decision on stripping Fernandes of Man Utd captaincy

Erik ten Hag reportedly has ‘no plans’ to strip Bruno Fernandes of the armband after calls for him to have the captaincy removed after his performance against Liverpool.

Fernandes has had the armband for most of the campaign, with Harry Maguire’s continued absence from the United team.

But the Portugal international displayed very little of the leadership skills that got him the armband against Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool on Sunday.

Fernandes pushed the assistant referee, held his face after being caught in the chest by Konate and gestured to leave the field after Liverpool scored their sixth goal.

Gary Neville labelled his actions a ‘disgrace’ after the game, while Roy Keane said the Red Devils players will feel that Fernandes let them down.

And there have been calls for Fernandes to have the captaincy removed and Ten Hag has shown already this campaign that he’s willing to be ruthless.

But the Sun claim Ten Hag has no plans to take the armband off Fernandes and the player still retains his faith.

Fernandes is reported to have spoken to his team-mates after the defeat, telling them they need to make amends in the remainder of the season.

Manchester United have little time to dwell on the defeat as they will play Real Betis at Old Trafford on Thursday.

Erik ten Hag’s side then get their Premier League season back on track with a home match against Southampton.
