Erik ten Hag has identified three Manchester United players who need to “step up” to help the club achieve further success in major competitions.

Under Ten Hag’s management, United secured the Carabao Cup last season, and they narrowly missed out on another trophy with a runner-up position in the FA Cup.

The current season may see Manchester United end without adding any silverware to their collection, as they’ve been eliminated from European competition and the Carabao Cup.

With a considerable gap behind Premier League leaders Liverpool, United’s best chance of securing a trophy in the 2023-24 season seems to lie in the FA Cup.

Their upcoming fifth-round match against Nottingham Forest on February 28 presents an opportunity to progress towards a Wembley final for the second consecutive year.

Ahead of this crucial fixture, Ten Hag has praised the potential of three young players – Kobbie Mainoo, Rasmus Hojlund, and Alejandro Garnacho – while urging them to elevate their performance levels to contribute to Old Trafford’s trophy aspirations.

‘I think they enjoy to play together, adventure, they want to do it together,’ Ten Hag said in his press conference on Thursday.

‘They want also to pass the ball to each other and that everyone can play to the qualities and score goals. It is brilliant they want to do it together and that is the key.

‘Young players… the future for Manchester United is quite bright with talent on board, you have to develop it.

‘This club wants to achieve a lot, this club wants to win trophies, very ambitious, so they have to step up and bring high levels. Also against the best opposition they have to express the same threat and it is about end product.’
