‘There’s only one club I want to join’ – Man Utd target, De Ligt tells agent

Matthijs de Ligt has stated that he “wants to join” Manchester United immediately, urging Bayern Munich to finalize the transfer.

The Dutch defender is a prime target for the Red Devils and has previously played under Erik ten Hag.

The 24-year-old was coached by the Dutch manager at Ajax before transferring to Juventus in 2019.

According to Sky Sports reporter Florian Plettenberg, De Ligt is eager to join Manchester United “with immediate effect.”

Plettenberg mentioned that Bayern has been notified of De Ligt’s decision and that advanced talks between the clubs are ongoing, though a final deal is not yet in place.

A verbal agreement between United and De Ligt for a long-term contract has been reached.

De Ligt’s agent, Rafaela Pimenta, is negotiating the final details to close the deal, but Plettenberg confirmed that a medical examination has not yet been scheduled.

The centre-back currently has three years remaining on his contract with Bayern, which he signed when he joined from Juventus in 2022.

De Ligt’s Euro 2024 campaign with Holland ended without him making an appearance, following a 2-1 semi-final defeat to England.

De Ligt joined Bayern from Juventus in 2022 for £56 million. However, he only appeared in 22 Bundesliga games for Bayern last season, hampered by an inner knee ligament injury.

He has faced significant competition at Bayern, alongside Dayot Upamecano, Kim Min-jae, and Eric Dier.

Meanwhile, Manchester United is close to signing another Dutch player, Bologna star Joshua Zirkzee, after discussions with the player’s agent.

The squad’s first pre-season match is scheduled for July 15 against Rosenborg, the day after the Euro 2024 final.
