Chelsea striker Timo Werner has played down the criticism he received from Thiago Silva’s wife and explained how his teammate was quick to apologise.
Isabelle da Silva was among those who criticised Werner after his lacklustre performance in Chelsea’s Champions League semi-final first leg game against Real Madrid.
In a video uploaded to Instagram, she said: ‘This is karma guys. Every team I go to there is a striker who keeps missing goals… this Werner, what is his name?!
‘We need a goal, we need to win this match but my attackers don’t want to score, I don’t know why they don’t score.’
Werner has confirmed Thiago apologised to him after the social media outburst, but he played down the incident and said things like that can happen in football when emotions are running high.
The German star made amends this week, scoring the opening goal as Chelsea beat Real Madrid 2-0 at Stamford Bridge to book a place in the Champions League final.
‘Sometimes that can happen when the emotions are overflowing,’ Werner told Sky Germany. ‘Thiago also apologised directly to me the next day.

‘That’s when the matter was ticked off. So I’m all the more happy today, not only for her but also with the other wives of my teammates!
‘Hopefully me and the team can get them to cheer again. It’s for the best that the women that are at home are happy, and that the fans are happy.’
However, Isabelle da Silva changed her tune after Werner’s goal against Real Madrid. She said: ‘Werner, very good. That’s what I’m talking about. You know how to score a goal. You’re the best, my friend! Love you!’
