Timo Werner admits Bayern’s win over Chelsea in the Champions League ‘hadn’t exactly spoken in favour’ of a move to the club but believes the blues have since gone some way to addressing the problems.
Goals from Serge Gnabry and Robert Lewandowski put Bayern in total control of the game and Chelsea’s hopes appeared to have been extinguished even before the second leg had been played.
The break in football caused by the pandemic meant Werner joined Chelsea before their trip to the Allianz Arena but he could not play any part in Munich as Bayern extended their advantage and secured a place in the next stage.
Asked whether it was shocking to watch Bayern’s comprehensive victorybover Chelsea, Werner told cfbayern.com: ‘I would be lying if I said it wasn’t like that.
‘The 3-0 home defeat of Chelsea in the first leg against Bayern hadn’t exactly spoken in favour of going to London. ‘I have to say that openly because with Leipzig we always played very good and close games against Bayern.’
Werner is confident Chelsea have learned their lessons from the defeat and made up ground on Bayern Munich in the short time that has passed.
‘With Bayern showing Chelsea their weak points, the club was able to work on the pieces of the puzzle in order to catch up with the future Champions League winners Bayern,’ the attacker added.
Werner, who is one of six new additions at Chelsea this summer, made his competitive debut in the side’s 3-1 victory at Brighton in the Premier League earlier this month.
The Germany international also played the full 90 minutes of Chelsea’s 2-0 loss at home to Liverpool last weekend but is yet to open his account for the west London outfit.
