Manchester United finished last season in eighth place in the Premier League and were reportedly on the verge of dismissing Ten Hag before he secured an FA Cup final victory over Manchester City.
Despite support from some players after the Wembley triumph, the team’s inconsistent performances this season have raised doubts about Ten Hag’s tenure.
A recent 3-0 loss to Tottenham at Old Trafford and a disappointing 3-3 draw with Porto in the Europa League have added to the pressure on the Dutch manager.
Sunday’s goalless draw against Aston Villa, a match many saw as pivotal, only served to highlight United’s struggles, as they continue to endure their worst-ever start to a Premier League season.
With just eight points from seven games, United sit 14th in the table, closer to the relegation zone than the Champions League places. Calls for Ten Hag’s dismissal have intensified, and Tuchel has once again been linked as a potential replacement.
Tuchel, who led Chelsea to a Champions League title in 2021, had conversations with Manchester United over the summer before the club chose to retain Ten Hag.
Despite the breakdown of those discussions, reports suggest Tuchel remains interested in taking the job. Having left Bayern Munich at the end of last season, where his team won the Bundesliga but finished well behind Bayer Leverkusen, Tuchel is currently available and could be an attractive option if United decide to make a change.
For now, Ten Hag maintains that the club is unified, stating after the Villa match that everyone is “on the same page.”
Asked if he believed the United owners were fully behind him, Ten Hag said: ‘I don’t have any idea that is different because they should have told me. We communicate – very open, very transparent.
‘I would say every day we talk, so I expect I will speak with them. We know what we are working through, it’s a long-term process.
‘We have come through two very tough away games. This is a team, we showed the belief and faith we have.’
