Tuchel reacts to Chelsea vs Tottenham Carabao Cup semi-final draw

Tuchel

Thomas Tuchel is pleased for Chelsea supporters after the club was handed a draw against Tottenham in the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup.

The London side beat Brentford in Wednesday night’s quarter-final, but they needed a late own goal from Pontus Jansson and a penalty from Jorginho to make their way into the last four.

Tottenham were also tested by Premier League opposition on Wednesday, but Bergwijn and Lucas Moura goals saw them get past West Ham with a 2-1 victory.

There is now another thrilling London derby in prospect as Tuchel’s Chelsea take on Antonio Conte’s Spurs over two legs in January.

The German coach is glad the supporters have an exciting pair of matches to look forward to and was proud of his much-changed side for securing progression.

‘Tottenham is nice for our fans. A London derby, we are looking forward to it and we want to be there,’ he said. ‘I am absolutely happy about this result, a brilliant result and a brilliant performance given the situation.’

With several players suffering with Covid, others out with injury and more not risked amid a busy schedule, Tuchel unleashed some youngsters against Brentford.

Teenagers Harvey Vale, Jude Soonsup-Bell and Xavier Simons were all given debuts, while players like Malang Sarr, Ross Barkley and Saul Niguez all came into the side.

‘They did well,’ said Tuchel. ‘They hadn’t trained for a week and then we invited them to training, they had two sessions with us.

‘They listened carefully and did their job. Full credit to the seven guys with who they played, they took care and made sure they did the right stuff.’
