Van der Vaart hits out at Chelsea star being compared to Van Persie

Van der Vaart on Werner

Rafael van der Vaart threatened to walk out of a television studio after Chelsea’s Timo Werner was compared to former Arsenal striker Robin van Persie.

Werner scored two goals in Chelsea’s 3-3 draw with Zenit on Wednesday, which ended up costing Chelsea top spot in Group H.

The German forward opened the scoring from close range in the second minute and looked to have netted Chelsea’s winning goal with five minutes left before Zenit equalised in injury time.

Dutch pundits in the Ziggo Sport studio hailed Werner for his second goal as he jinked inside Zenit’s box before he fired a low effort past goalkeeper Mikhail Kerzhakov.

But Van der Vaart, who was working as a pundit for the match, was not happy with the comparisons between Van Persie and Werner.

‘If you compare Werner with Van Persie one more time, I will walk away now,’ Van der Vaart said.

Meanwhile, Werner concedes Chelsea’s players ‘lacked a bit of confidence’ in the second half of the Champions League game against Zenit.

‘It was important for me to come back in the shape and the two goals and assist helped to come back to a level as what I had before the injury,’ said Werner.

‘I am happy about that. But in the end, you play like a team and when you don’t win you are also disappointed. ‘We had a very good 15 minutes and I don’t know why we dropped. I think the goal helped us to come into the game.

‘But at the end we had not the last punch to score the second goal in the first 15 minutes because we had the chances to create some good opportunities and after that we lacked a bit of confidence.

‘In the second half we played much better, and we turned the result around. After the first half when you lead 3-2 you have to win this game.’
