Liverpool’s 2-2 draw with Manchester United at Anfield brought a few unexpected moments.
Many thought Ruben Amorim’s team would be overrun, given Liverpool’s excellent scoring form and United’s recent struggles.
However, led by Bruno Fernandes, United displayed impressive skill and matched Arne Slot’s side for long stretches of the game. ..Continue Reading
Although Liverpool dominated at times, conceding chances at Anfield is almost inevitable for any team.
United performed exceptionally well by their recent standards and even had a great opportunity to win late on through Harry Maguire, assuming Joshua Zirkzee was onside during the buildup.
Yet, there was a less favorable moment involving Liverpool substitute Darwin Nunez in the second half.
Nunez, who replaced Luis Diaz in the 60th minute, made an overly aggressive challenge on United defender Mathijs de Ligt in the 77th minute while competing for an aerial ball.
Referee Michael Oliver issued Nunez a yellow card, but it was surprising that VAR did not recommend a second look at the incident.
Nunez led with his arm and collided with De Ligt with significant force, leaving the Dutchman on the ground.
Pundit Pat Nevin, who was watching the game for BBC Radio 5 Live, echoed similar thoughts, stating that Nunez was ‘incredibly lucky’ to remain on the field.
Nevin said: “Definite yellow for Darwin Nunez. To be honest, I think Nunez is staggeringly fortunate there.
“That’s absolutely horrible, straight in on the player, not looking at the ball. Matthijs de Ligt saved him by getting up so quickly.”
In his 80 Premier League matches, Nunez has accumulated one red card and 15 yellow cards.
The Uruguayan was dismissed on his home debut for Liverpool after allegedly headbutting Joachim Andersen in a 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace.
On a brighter note, United supporters were impressed by Leny Yoro’s performance against Liverpool, particularly his perfectly timed tackle on Nunez that thwarted a significant scoring opportunity.
