Raphael Varane speaks out on partnership with Maguire after Man Utd debut

Raphael Varane says he and Harry Maguire have already formed a good partnership built on ‘good communication’ after an impressive opening display in Manchester United’s 1-0 win over Wolves.

The defender completed a £34m switch from Real Madrid to Old Trafford this month and United fans were made to wait for his debut, but he did not disappoint on Sunday.

As well as coming away from the game with a clean sheet, Varane provided the assist for Mason Greenwood’s late strike and Solskjaer was ‘delighted’ with his display.

Varane is expected to continue at the heart of the United defence at home to Newcastle after the international break and it’s clear he’s already struck up a good bond with club skipper Maguire.

‘Very good. He’s a good player,’ Varane told MUTV when asked to assess his partnership with the England defender. ‘We had good communication, that’s very important, and the same spirit: to fight and to win the game.’

Varane is relishing the challenge of adapting to the pace and ‘very intense’ nature of the Premier League.

‘It’s a good feeling! I was very, very happy to be here and to help the team get this victory. The feeling is absolutely amazing,’ he added.

‘The Premier League is very intense. The game it’s very fast and you know when you play this game, you are very concentrated and it’s very intense. ‘I came here for that feeling.’

Varane was full of praise for Manchester United’s travelling support that made the trip to Wolves last week.

‘It was a good atmosphere, and they gave us good help during the game,’ he added. ‘When it’s hard, we need fans and we have very good support from our fans.’
