Why Chelsea’s Tammy Abraham is stalling over new contract

Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham is delaying signing a new contract due to concerns over wages and his place at the club, according to reports.

The England international still has over two years on his current deal, but the blues want to secure his future for the long term.

Abraham has hit the ground running in his first full campaign at Stamford Bridge, scoring 13 Premier League goals this season.

According to The Athletic, the 22-year-old is holding out for a wage packet similar to the one Chelsea gave to teammate Callum Hudson-Odoi.

The 18-year-old attacker signed a £120,000-a-week deal last year in September 2019, which rises to around £180,000 including add-ons.

Tammy Abraham is also weary of Chelsea’s plans to sign another striker in the summer window, with at least one of Giroud and Michy Batshuayi set to leave the club.

Chelsea have been linked with Lyon striker Moussa Dembele, after accepting that RB Leipzig’s Timo Werner is more likely to sign for Liverpool.

A new forward recruit may hinder Abraham’s playing time in the team, and the England striker will want assurances before he signs a new deal.

Lampard’s side are currently occupying fourth spot in the league table, but their remaining nine matches have been thrown into doubt over the coronavirus pandemic.

The FA made the decision to postpone all Premier League games until April 4 after Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta and Hudson-Odoi tested positive for the disease.
