‘Thank you to the fans for the support all the season. My first game playing with one eye’
Fernandez, considered one of the Premier League’s top defensive midfielders, delivered a solid 90-minute display under the Stamford Bridge floodlights.
Although his midfield partner Moises Caicedo stole much of the spotlight, the 24-year-old still made a strong impact in the center of the pitch.
Despite hinting after the match that he had played with impaired vision—essentially relying on just one eye—he remained effective throughout.
Following Chelsea’s home victory over a struggling Manchester United, Fernandez took to Instagram to express his gratitude to the Stamford Bridge supporters for their unwavering backing.
Claiming that the club have ‘two finals left’, he wrote: “[It was the] last match at home with this group that will give it all until the end, we have two finals left. Thank you to the fans for the support all the season. My first game playing with one eye.”
Curiosity got the better of Chelsea fans – with a couple wondering whether something happened behind the scenes to disrupt the harmony in the club’s camp.
“I wonder what happened during training,” one said as another asked: “Did something happen behind the scenes?”
According to BBC Sport, it has emerged that Fernandez has been playing with conjunctivitis over his last two Premier League appearances—Chelsea’s 1-0 victory against Manchester United and their 2-0 loss to Newcastle United the previous weekend.
Despite struggling with the infection, the 2022 World Cup-winning midfielder has remained a pivotal figure for Chelsea, determined to help his team end the 2024/25 season on a strong note.
As Chelsea push for a place among Europe’s elite next season, they will head to Nottingham Forest’s City Ground on the final day needing a crucial win. Before that, they travel to Wroclaw in pursuit of European silverware.
