Why Mbappe won’t be allowed to wear his mask for France at Euro 2024

Kylian Mbappe was seen wearing a new mask during France’s training session at Euro 2024, but he won’t be able to wear it in matches.

The France captain broke his nose in a collision with defender Kevin Danso during their 1-0 win over Austria on Monday.

He couldn’t finish the match, raising concerns about his availability for the rest of the group stage.

No decision has been made yet on whether he will play against the Netherlands on Friday. However, manager Didier Deschamps mentioned in his pre-match press conference that Mbappe is “feeling better.”

In training on Thursday, Mbappe wore a mask in the colors of the French flag—white, red, and blue.

Despite this, he won’t be able to wear that mask during Euro 2024 matches due to UEFA’s specific regulations on masks, as reported by The Athletic.

The regulation reads that medical equipment ‘must be a single colour and free of team and manufacturer identification’.

The full law is as follows: “Medical equipment (e.g.: head protection, face masks, casts, kneepads or knee braces, elbow pads): Medical equipment worn on the field of play must be a single colour and free of team and manufacturer identification.

“Items worn on legs and arms should be the same colour as the corresponding playing attire item (e.g.: elbow pads or tape used on the arm the same colour as shirt sleeves, and kneepads the same colour as shorts).”

The French Football Federation must ensure that any mask Mbappe wears is approved by UEFA before the game, which kicks off in Leipzig on Friday at 8pm. According to The Athletic, compliant masks have already been prepared.

While the specific penalties for not adhering to these regulations are unclear, it seems the situation is under control.
