The England international is heading to Camp Nou on a temporary deal that includes a purchase clause, following Barcelona’s failure to land their preferred target, Nico Williams. ..Continue Reading
Having fallen out of favor under United manager Ruben Amorim, Rashford has accepted a significant pay cut in hopes of reigniting his career in La Liga.
Barcelona’s ongoing financial struggles have been widely reported and were a key factor in the breakdown of their pursuit of Williams earlier this summer.
The Athletic Club winger had demanded assurances that Barcelona could register him without issue—a concern that stemmed from the club’s previous difficulties registering Dani Olmo.
La Liga chief Javier Tebas has publicly stated that Barcelona lacked the financial capacity to register Williams, and Rashford has been cautioned that he could encounter similar obstacles upon arrival.
talkSPORT’s Andy Brassell told the Trans Europe Express: “He’s taking a pay cut to make this happen, but there’s still no guarantee, certainly if you believe Javier Tebas, the president of LaLiga, that Barcelona will be able to register him for the moment. That is something that we have to keep an eye on, as with every Barcelona signing. That was what made Nico Williams back out of the deal.
“Rashford doesn’t have an enormous amount of options, partly because of his salary, partly because of a disappointing last couple of years, even if he did show bits of his old self at Aston Villa. “Both sides needed this to happen quite badly, which I think is great news for Marcus Rashford, it’s great news for England, and if it all works, it’s good news for Barcelona as well.”
Barcelona have long struggled with player registration issues.
Olmo was unable to feature in the first two matches of the 2024–25 La Liga season due to delays in his registration, and Jules Kounde experienced a similar setback after his transfer from Sevilla, missing the opening fixture.
Marcus Rashford is expected to finalize his loan move to Barcelona soon and link up with the squad for their pre-season tour in Asia.
However, the club still needs to resolve administrative hurdles to ensure Rashford, along with fellow newcomers Joan Garcia and Roony Bardghji, are properly registered and cleared to play before their league opener against Real Mallorca on August 16.
