Granit Xhaka takes swipe at Arsenal team-mates ahead of Roma transfer

Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka has taken a swipe at his team-mates as the player closes in on a transfer move to Roma.

The 28-year-old is a major target for Jose Mourinho, who returned to the Italian Serie A after being sacked by Tottenham in April.

Arsenal are open to letting Xhaka leave after five years at the Emirates, with reports suggesting in the last 24 hours that a fee of around £16m has already been agreed between the two sides.

Despite Arsenal’s underwhelming season, Xhaka enjoyed one of his better campaigs in a red shirt as he played 45 matches in all competitions.

But, in a sly dig at his team-mates, Xhaka says ‘you’re only as good as your team’ as he concesed that he feels ‘very bitter’ about how the campaign panned out.

‘Football is a team sport & you’re only as good as your team,’ said Xhaka.

‘Of course, it was a good year for me personally. I’ve always played & performed. ‘But the place at the end of the season is, of course, really bitter & disappointing for us.’

The gunners hope to use the cash gotten from Xhaka’s exit to sign Wolves midfielder Ruben Neves. As the Midlands club value the Portuguese star at around £35m and Arteta knows he must sell first before landing the ex-Porto captain.

Arsenal are also open to offers for Hector Bellerin, Guendouzi, Eddie Nketiah, Reiss Nelson and Ainsley Maitland-Niles this summer.
