Graham Potter says a recent tweet ‘liked’ by Todd Boehly’s Twitter account slamming Marc Cucurella is ‘not a reflection’ of the Chelsea co-owner.
Cucurella moved to Stamford Bridge from Brighton in a £57m deal in the summer transfer window but has struggled to replicate last season’s outstanding form in west London.
On Thursday, Boehly’s Twitter account liked a tweet from football.london with an article showing quotes from former Chelsea player Frank Leboeuf.
‘We don’t want to see Cucurella anymore,’ the club’s former defender said. ‘With all due respect to a man that I don’t know, the player is not good enough for Chelsea. It’s as simple as that.’
Quizzed on the social media activity, Potter told a press conference on Friday: ‘I don’t know, I can’t comment. It is nothing I would say is a reflection of Todd in any way.
‘But I don’t know how social media works. But like I have said, everyone here is really supportive of Marc and we trying to help him get back to the level he can get to and enjoy his football because if a player is enjoying their football they are playing well.’
Cucurella was named Brighton’s Player of the Season under Potter last campaign but has endured a poor season campaign this term with Lewis Hall preferred in recent weeks.
In January, Potter revealed the left-back has been dealing with some ‘off-the-pitch issues’ which may have contributed to his disappointing form.
And while the Chelsea head coach understands fan frustration with the Spanish defender, he insists the club will remain patient with him.
‘They are human being and they have got private lives and they have got things going on. Marc is not the only one,’ Potter said.
‘But at the same time you understand supporters, they pay their money and the most important thing is what is happening on that pitch in the 90 minutes. But nevertheless, you have to deal with stuff in your private life.
‘But he is fine, he is going about his work and he knows he is probably not in the best moment of form he has ever been in.
‘But he is not the only player who has ever gone through those moments. he is a player who the club invested money in and it is our job to support him and bring him to the place where he is showing everyone his qualities.’
