Bellingham faces Real Madrid ban after aiming ‘rapist’ slur at Greenwood

A deadline for investigation has been established following Jude Bellingham’s alleged comment to Mason Greenwood.

The two English internationals faced off against each other on Thursday, February 1, as Real secured a 2-0 victory over Getafe, thanks to a brace from Joselu.

However, the match became mired in controversy due to an alleged remark from Bellingham to Greenwood following a tackle.

Although no audio was available in the shared footage on social media, Getafe lodged a formal complaint, prompting both La Liga and the Spanish FA (RFEF) to initiate an investigation, which included the assistance of a lip reader.

An update on the situation has been provided by Spanish outlet COPE, stating that a judge will soon begin collecting information regarding the allegation.

Subsequently, there is a 15-day window for a proposal to be made on whether the complaint warrants further action. Following this, each club will have 10 days to present their evidence.

The report states: “The next step is to appoint an investigating judge who will gather all the available information about what happened and who in about 15 days will make a proposal for sanction or dismissal of the complaint. From there, the clubs will have 10 business days to present allegations.”

If evidence confirms that Bellingham did, in fact, make a derogatory remark, it is alleged that he could face a ban of up to four games.

Both representatives of Real and Getafe have refrained from commenting on the incident, although Getafe’s manager, Jose Bordalas, did provide a brief statement.

In a press conference this month, he said: “I know the same thing that you know. It’s not up to me, it’s the club, La Liga and the Federation that have to make an assessment about it.

“The only thing that I can say is that I ask for respect from Mason Greenwood because he is a great guy.

“He is a man who respects everyone and has exemplary behaviour.”

After a thorough club investigation concluded that it would be in Greenwood’s best interest to continue his career away from Old Trafford, he joined Getafe on loan from Manchester United in the summer.

His last appearance for the club occurred in January 2022, before Greenwood faced legal troubles. He was arrested and charged with attempted rape, assault, and coercive control.

However, over a year later, the Crown Prosecution Service dropped the charges following the withdrawal of key witnesses and the emergence of new evidence.
