When asked who should win the 2024 Ballon d’Or, Sergio Aguero was quick to give his opinion.
On September 4, the 30 nominees for the 2024 men’s Ballon d’Or were revealed, but some notable names were absent.
For the first time since 2003, neither Lionel Messi nor Cristiano Ronaldo made the shortlist for the prestigious award.
Messi had won the 2023 Ballon d’Or after leading Argentina to victory in the 2022 World Cup, marking his eighth win.
Real Madrid’s Vinicius Junior is the frontrunner this year, although his teammates Jude Bellingham and Kylian Mbappe are also strong contenders.
However, many fans, players, and coaches argue that the award should go to Manchester City midfielder Rodri.
While Rodri may not have eye-catching goal or assist stats, there’s no denying that he’s the best holding midfielder since Sergio Busquets was in his prime.
Last season, Rodri helped Manchester City secure their fourth consecutive Premier League title before leading Spain to victory in Euro 2024.
Despite his close friendship with Messi, City legend Sergio Aguero didn’t hesitate to back Rodri as his choice for the Ballon d’Or.
“Rodri deserves it,” Aguero said when asked about the matter.
On X he wrote: “A perfect year, you deserve it. Come on Rodri!”
Rodri is one of four Man City players to make the 30-man shortlist, along with Erling Haaland, Ruben Dias & Phil Foden.
Kevin De Bruyne played a major role in City’s title push last campaign, but he wasn’t included after missing the first half of the season with a hamstring injury.
The winners of the men’s and women’s Ballon d’Or will be announced at the 68th edition of the Ballon d’Or ceremony on October 28 at the Theatre du Chatelet in Paris.
