Fermin Lopez, Raphinha, and Robert Lewandowski each netted twice, helping the Catalan giants narrow the gap to league leaders Real Madrid to just two points.
Their attention now turns to Thursday night’s European fixture, but preparations have been disrupted by troubling news.
Reports from Mundo Deportivo indicate that rising star Lamine Yamal is expected to miss the clash due to a pubic injury. The teenager is undergoing treatment, and unless there’s a dramatic recovery, he won’t feature against Newcastle.
On a more positive note, Barcelona received a boost after successfully appealing Hansi Flick’s touchline ban.
The German coach had initially been suspended for one match following his conduct during the semi-final loss to Inter Milan.
But UEFA has now deferred the punishment for a year, allowing him to lead his team from the sidelines on Thursday.
As per Tribal Football, a statement from UEFA read: “Said suspension is suspended during a probationary period of one (1) year, starting from the date of the present decision.”
Furthermore, there’s a possibility that Frenkie de Jong will be available for Barcelona’s upcoming fixture against Newcastle, following his recovery from a recent injury setback.
The Dutch midfielder, who sat out the emphatic win over Valencia, reportedly resumed training with the squad on Monday in preparation for Thursday’s Champions League showdown.
Ahead of the high-stakes encounter, Newcastle manager Eddie Howe addressed questions regarding the likely absence of Lamine Yamal from the Barcelona lineup.
He replied: “Whenever I get asked about these types of questions, I think my answer is always the same.
“You want to play the best teams, you want to play against the best players, you want to challenge yourselves as much as you can.”
