In recent decades, Eric Cantona, George Best, and Sir Bobby Charlton have all been standout figures for the Red Devils and in English football overall.
Yet among the most prominent names, Ronaldo and Rooney are often regarded as two of the club’s most celebrated and influential players, especially in the Premier League era.
However, the two former teammates seem to disagree on a major football debate, and Ronaldo is clearly displeased.
Piers Morgan has consistently expressed his belief that Ronaldo is the greatest footballer of all time.
While the debate is subjective, many fans narrow it down to Ronaldo or his longtime rival Lionel Messi.
Despite sharing the pitch with Ronaldo for five years between 2004 and 2009, Rooney chose Messi when asked to name the GOAT—a choice that didn’t sit well with Ronaldo when Morgan brought it up during a recent interview.
In a preview clip of Morgan’s upcoming interview with Ronaldo, the journalist said: “Wayne Rooney has said that he doesn’t hate you, but he still said that Messi is better.”
Ronaldo, visibly irritated, responded: “No problem. I don’t agree – I don’t want to be humble.”
The full interview will air on the Piers Morgan Uncensored channel on November 4, but it’s evident Ronaldo disagrees with his former teammate, who explained his preference for Messi on The Overlap.
“I understand that people can say Messi, people can say Ronaldo – they are both incredible, probably the best two players to ever play the game,” said Rooney.
When asked “Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo?” he quickly replied “Lionel Messi.”
“For me, Messi has just got that little bit more flair, which I like in a player, so that’s the reason.”
This isn’t the first time Ronaldo has taken aim at Rooney during a Morgan interview; he did so previously in the explosive conversation that preceded his departure from United in November 2022.
While discussing wealth and popularity, Morgan asked: “More pounds in the bank or more Instagram followers?”
Ronaldo answered: “That’s a good question! Probably similar!”
Morgan then joked: “I’m just trying to work out how Wayne Rooney could hate you even more!”
Ronaldo replied: “Not only him, imagine the rest of the rats they are going to criticise me too, but it is good to still be the number one.”
