Arsenal have surged to a six-point advantage at the summit after winning eight of their opening ten matches. ..Continue Reading
While only one other side has outscored the Gunners in the Premier League, their standout strength has been an exceptionally disciplined backline, allowing just three goals across all competitions.
Their impressive start—combined with inconsistent performances from Liverpool and Manchester City—has positioned Mikel Arteta’s squad as the leading favourites to secure the Premier League.
Arsenal last lifted the Premier League trophy in 2004 and have ended the past three campaigns as runners-up.
Cole is optimistic that the Gunners’ long wait for domestic glory may soon end, but he cautions Arteta and his players that Liverpool will ‘push them all the way’.
After suffering four consecutive defeats, the reigning champions fell seven points behind Arsenal, but Arne Slot’s men bounced back with a victory over Aston Villa last weekend.
Liverpool’s resurgence continued on Tuesday with a win over Real Madrid in the Champions League, courtesy of Alexis Mac Allister’s second-half strike.
Cole was thoroughly impressed by Liverpool’s performances against Villa and Madrid, and believes they are now well-positioned to compete for both the Premier League and Champions League.
‘I thought they were brilliant against Villa at the weekend and I thought they were equally outstanding tonight,’ Cole said on TNT Sports.
‘It’s a marquee win. They really took Real Madrid to the sword. It could have been three or four. [Thibaut] Courtois was brilliant. I think it’s a marker down for them to say, we are at it again.
‘I think Liverpool will kick on and I think they’ll push Arsenal all the way in the league and I think they’ve got a right good chance in the Champions League.’
Explaining his support for Arsenal’s title bid, Cole added: ‘I think Arsenal will win the league and maybe the Champions League as well. I really think they’re brilliant.’
Liverpool’s recent momentum will be tested this weekend when they visit the Etihad Stadium to take on Manchester City.
Reflecting on Liverpool’s earlier struggles following their win over Real Madrid, Slot said: ‘It is nicer if you win games than if you lose as a manager.
‘If you lose then it takes all of your time because you so badly want to change it but you also try to be the same manager and person that you are when you are winning.
‘Sunday [against Man City] is another game coming up against a very strong team. We have lost too many points in the Premier League but in the Champions League we are doing well.
‘We need to do better and that is what we are going to try and there’s a lot of games coming up for us to show that.’
By the time Manchester City welcome Liverpool on Sunday, Arsenal may have extended their lead to nine points, as they face Sunderland earlier in the weekend.
In addition to widening their advantage, Arsenal will be aiming to secure a ninth consecutive clean sheet—a feat that would set a new club record.
