While United initially showed promise with Amorim’s preferred 3-4-3 formation, they struggled to adapt to the new system after only a few training sessions under the new manager.
Goalkeeper Andre Onana was called into action multiple times, making key saves to secure a point for the Red Devils.
The result left United in 12th place in the Premier League, serving as a reminder of the challenging task ahead for Amorim in his bid to restore success at Old Trafford.
Sources have revealed that Amorim shared his thoughts on the game, with The Sun reporting that the former Sporting CP manager gave his players a rating of five out of ten.
He expressed disappointment with the performance of some players and was taken aback by the intensity of Ipswich’s play.
Despite his frustrations, Amorim remained calm, acknowledging that significant improvements are needed going forward.
A dressing room source quoted by The Sun said: “Amorim said their performance was a five out of ten.
“He was impressed with Ipswich and thought the game was played at an incredible intensity.
“But he added that it showed just how much United need to improve. He was critical of one or two players for losing the ball and not being in the right positions.
“But he also said, ‘Some of you I’ve had for two days, some two weeks’, so he was realistic. He did say they were going to have to learn quickly.”
Amorim deployed Amad Diallo as a right wing-back, shifted Marcus Rashford back to a central forward position, and used Noussair Mazraoui as a center-back in a three-man defense.
Jonny Evans started on the left side of the defense before being substituted for the returning Luke Shaw in the second half.
Reflecting on his team’s performance, Amorim felt that the players were overthinking the tactical instructions from the coaching staff. However, he appreciated their effort to implement the principles they had worked on during training.
Speaking after the game, Amorim commented: “They tried to do it, that’s the main point. We have a lot to improve, but they tried. This is the first point; the most important point.
“They were thinking too much during the game, trying to cope with everything we said during training. But it was [just] two trainings.”
He added: “We could win this game, but also Onana did great saves. It’s always tough to play in this league and we will improve in the future.”
