The North London club are reportedly in advanced negotiations with Sporting Lisbon over a move for Gyökeres, while interest in Šeško appears to have cooled for the time being. ..Continue Reading
Bringing in a top-class striker is Arsenal’s main objective this transfer window, and both Gyökeres and Šeško have been high on their shortlist.
Although both forwards are expected to leave their current clubs before the 2025–26 season begins, it had remained unclear which of the two Arsenal would prioritize for a big-money move.
Now, according to fresh reports from Europe, it’s Gyökeres who looks set to make the switch to the Emirates.
Sky Sports reports that Arsenal and Sporting are deep into talks over a major deal that would see the 27-year-old Swedish striker leave the Portuguese league for the Premier League.
Negotiations between the clubs are progressing, and it’s believed that Gyökeres has already agreed to a five-year contract with Arsenal.
The Gunners are reportedly confident that they are nearing the final stages of the deal, having shifted their focus away from Šeško, who signed a new contract with RB Leipzig after being heavily pursued last summer.
Despite earlier claims that Šeško was Mikel Arteta’s preferred option, speculation surrounding Gyökeres has only intensified.
The striker is said to be eager to join Arsenal, even though Manchester United have also shown interest and are now targeting Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt.
Gyökeres has also turned down a lucrative offer worth £11 million per year from Juventus, as he prefers a move to North London, where Arsenal are looking to strengthen a squad that finished second in the league for a third straight season.
Tensions between Gyökeres and Sporting have escalated, with the player reportedly furious after the club failed to honor a previous gentleman’s agreement to let him leave for a fee well below his release clause.
Sporting Lisbon president Federico Varandas recently said: “Sporting is calm regarding this matter. Secondly, Sporting does not need to sell Viktor Gyokeres. Fortunately, we have moved past the phase of selling our main asset.
“However, we remain sensitive to Viktor’s dreams or those of any other athlete. Sporting has made a commitment that, after weeks of meetings, we will not demand the full amount of the clause; we will be reasonable regarding the amount requested for Viktor.
“Today, there is a strong likelihood that he will leave. I won’t disclose the amount, but the player knows what it is. I can say that Viktor will not leave for 60+10m. He won’t leave, absolutely not.
“In recent weeks, we have been paying attention. I saw a player, [Martin] Zubimendi, who is six months younger than Viktor, go for 65 million, and I saw Matheus Cunha move to Manchester United for around 75 million euros. We are talking about players who are 26 years old. I believe Viktor could leave, unless he has the worst agent in the world, which I don’t believe, as his agent is one of the best in the world.”
