Bayer Leverkusen confirm Chelsea target Kai Havertz has left club

Bayer Leverkusen boss Peter Bosz has confirmed that he does not expect Kai Havertz to return to the club for training this summer amid speculation the midfielder is on his way to Chelsea.

Chelsea have set their sights on finalising a move for Kai Havertz after completing the signings of Timo Werner, Hakim Ziyech, Ben Chilwell and Thiago Silva this summer.

It is believed Havertz agreed a five-year deal at Stamford Bridge this month and Chelsea will pay Bayer Leverkusen £72m up front plus another £18m in bonuses for the German star.

Havertz’s absence from Leverkusen’s pre-season fitness tests on Sunday fuelled speculation of an impending transfer to London and the player now expects to be at Chelsea next campaign.

But, Havertz is currently with the German national team in Stuttgart ahead of their Nations League games with Spain and Switzerland, meaning an announcement may have to be on hold for now.

But Bosz comments on Monday means that Havertz will not be returning to Leverkusen from Germany’s training camp – and that it’s only a matter of time before he signs for Chelsea officially.

‘Kevin Volland and the national players didn’t participate today in training today,’ the Bayer Leverkusen manager said at his press conference.

‘Leon Bailey also wasn’t there. Unfortunately our squad isn’t set yet. ‘I don’t expect Volland (set to join Monaco) and Havertz to train with us again.

‘It’s possible more players will transfer and we definitely still have to add some players.’

Bosz added: ‘As a coach, it would be great if the squad was complete at the start of pre-season, but these days that’s hardly ever the case.

‘Much has changed due to the coronavirus pandemic and that makes things more complex. ‘It’s my responsibility as a coach to deal with it.’
