Roberto Carlos responds to comparisons with Man Utd’s Luke Shaw

Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw has been backed to reach the very top by Brazil legend Roberto Carlos.

Shaw had a superb season at United last year and finally looked like the player that persuaded the club to break the British transfer record for a teenager — back in 2014 when he joined from Southampton.

That form saw Shaw earn his return in the England squad and, he has become the starting left-back for Gareth Southgate’s side at Euro 2020.

Shaw has registered three assists in the Euros so far, including two in England’s 4-0 victory over Ukraine in the quarter-finals.

His explosiveness and creativity have earned him the nickname “Shawberto Carlos” among his England teammates and supporters.

But the man he’s been named after, the famous Brazilian Carlos, believes Shaw will make a name for himself going forward.

Speaking to PA Sport, the former World Cup winner said: “You can see he’s very motivated, his performance against Ukraine was very good. He’s been improving each game. I think he’s got everything to get to the top. He’s the left-back for England — that in itself says a lot.”

Carlos was known for his speed and ferocious left-foot, making a name for himself in the famous yellow of Brazil and white of Real Madrid. When asked about comparisons between himself and Shaw, Carlos added: “I don’t like comparing.

“It’s two completely different periods in football. I had my time and now he’s having his. “Similarities I think could be that he has strength and the desire to win, just like I did.”

The Real Madrid legend will find himself at United in the coming months as part of the line-up for Soccer Aid which will happen at the Etihad in September.
