Carragher tells United to sign a world-class player to replace Anthony Martial

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has persuaded Manchester United to sign a ‘world-class player’ to replace Anthony Martial, who he believes cannot lead the club to a Premier League title.

The Red devils have been on a good run since the campaign return and they defeated Aston Villa on Thursday to ensure they are still in the fight for next season’s champions League.

Anthony Martial has endured a mixed spell at United after his £36m transfer from Monaco in 2015, scoring 68 goals but also being out of the team at some point.

Manchester United’s recent form has raised hope of a possible title challenge from Solskjaer’s team next campaign but Carragher doubts Martial can help them to the title and claims they must sign another ‘world-class’ striker.

United have been heavily linked with a transfer move for Jadon Sancho in recent months, but his £100m price tag has been causing issues.

Former England player Jamie Carragher told the Telegraph: ‘Bruno Fernandes’ impact on United’s front three is cause for excitement.

‘Between them, Anthony Martial, Rashford and Greenwood have scored 56 this season, three more than Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane.

‘That is not insignificant. On their day, the United trio can be devastating. But as a whole those statistics are no more relevant to the title race than Fowler and Stan Collymore (55) outscoring Andy Cole and Eric Cantona (32) in 1995-96. Who won the double that season?

‘What matters in the Premier League is Liverpool have scored 16 more, conceded seven fewer, and collected 34 more points.

‘Liverpool possess an attacking trio that is difficult to improve. Can we say the same of United?

‘I think they need another world-class player at the top end of the pitch. Martial’s goal record has improved but I am yet to be convinced he is the man to fire them to a title challenge.’
