Meanwhile, Romeo Lavia is sidelined for a few weeks with a thigh injury, leaving the Italian manager short of options in the midfield.
Andrey Santos has emerged as one of the names Chelsea is considering in their search for a new midfielder, sources have told TBR Football’s chief correspondent Graeme Bailey.
Chelsea have been pleased with Santos’ progress on loan at Strasbourg, where he has scored eight goals and provided two assists this season.
The 20-year-old also impressed towards the end of last season in Ligue 1, after his unsuccessful loan spell at Nottingham Forest was cut short.
However, TBR Football claims there is an internal debate at Stamford Bridge about whether Santos should finish the season at Strasbourg or be brought back for the second half.
Some within the West London club believe that Santos could make a significant impact and is better than some of the current options they are considering.
Santos would bring versatility to Chelsea, having played both as a number eight and as a holding midfielder for Strasbourg.
The youngster has become a key player for the French outfit under manager Liam Rosenior, who believes Santos will have an “outstanding career”.
Rosenior’s team has been in excellent form, currently enjoying a six-game unbeaten streak and climbing into the top half of the French top flight, with Santos playing a significant role.
Despite his central midfielder role, Santos has scored eight goals and registered two assists in 19 appearances across all competitions.
